Designer Toys are limited edition toys and action figures that are designed by artists, fashion designers, graphic designers, graffiti artists, and other creative types. They are typically hand painted and may be designed to have flaws or differences from one toy to another. Designer toys are typically produced in small production runs of less than 2000 pieces which make them highly sought after collectibles.
The largest subcategory of designer toys is vinyl figures. Vinyl figures are vinyl rotocast figures that range in size from a few inches tall to a few feet. Due to the amazing diversity of the artists that design vinyl figures, there are very few common characteristics of vinyl figures, but the rotocasting process used to create the figures does inherently add a few common traits. Typically, the detailing of vinyl figures is not as detailed as a normal PVC molded figure, but it does allow artists to take additional steps to stylize their vinyl figures. Due to the fact that the rotocasting process allows designers to make vinyl figures with less material (the figures are hollow), there is a tendency to make larger figures, or figures with over-exaggerated characteristics, such as oversized hands or feet. Although the sculpting of designer toys and vinyl figures is important, most designers of the toys seem to rely on the painting of the figures to set them apart. In fact, a number of
designer toy companies have made a name for themselves by reusing very simple sculpts and commissioning artists to create their painted version of the figures. Hasbro is not a true designer toy company, because the figures are mass produced and not limited edition, but they have recently taken this idea to the mainstream with their Mighty Muggs figures. These vinyl figures are a perfect example of how a single vinyl figure sculpt can be transformed into a multitude of characters just by changing the paint.
Speaking of paint, that brings us to another subcategory of designer toys, DIY, or “do it yourself” toys. DIY action figures are unpainted figures that allow customers to create their own custom designer vinyl toys. Most designer toy and vinyl figure manufacturers produce some DIY figures with each production run of fully painted figures.
Vinyl figures and DIY figures are just the tip of the iceberg when in comes to designer toys. The diversity of the figures is as broad as the artists that produce them. Additional types of designer toys may include designer plush, blow-up figures (action figures that are filled with air like a balloon) and endless wood, metal, or plastic toys.
